GWAR Frontman Sounds Off On SLIPKNOT, BUSH And METAL BLADE RECORDS
December 6, 2004GWAR frontman Dave Brockie (a.k.a. Oderus Ungurus) recently spoke to AbrasiveRock.com about SLIPKNOT, Metal Blade Records and President George W. Bush, among other topics. Several excerpts from the interview follow:
On SLIPKNOT:
"I see SLIPKNOT, and they're, 'Yeah, we're so mad and evil blah, blah, blah.' Okay, whatever. Your misplaced angst is really lost on me, because I know you're rich as fuck! You know? And besides that, you're from Iowa."
On Metal Blade Records:
"They got a lot of what I would call mediocre metal bands on their label.
Maybe a couple good ones. Then there was GWAR. There was no hard feelings, but we just didn't feel like they were cutting the mustard. DRT came along. We got to the end of the Metal Blade contract, and they wanted us to sign an extension to it, and the first thing they did to totally alienate us is, 'This is a non-negotiable contract. You sign it, or don't take it.' And it's like, fuck you. You negotiate everything in this business. I don't know if this is some thing you do to bands that don't know what the fuck they're doing, but we do, and we're not signing anything that's 'non-negotiable.' So this dragged this on for three fucking years, after 'Violence Has Arrived' had come out. They wouldn't budge. We wouldn't budge. So we started looking for new labels."
On Bush:
"It's absolutely unbelievable that we elected that bastard. It's either Americans are as stupid as they say we are, or our electoral process is a complete sham. ...or both."
On Epitaph Records:
"Punk rock bands. Smarmy, stinky, loser suburban bullshit rich kids who got no fucking idea who THE EXPLOITED are, much less have heard their music, but are walking around wearing a fucking t-shirt, and especially these Epitaph whiny emo, that's it! I mean, the punk rock, I can understand them still dressing up like Sid Vicious because it's like rite of passage. It's cool. I don't really buy it, but I can live with it, but emo! No! There's a horrible emo hard core synthesis of Epitaph, like nyah, nyah, nyah."
